The old Shanghai was a rich and cosmopolitan mixture of East and West. This book provides a glimpse into that world with a mish-mash of photos, newspaper clippings, cartoons and writings to bring back to life those far-off days.
There has never been a place like Shanghai -- the layers and depth of richness that the city possesses is extraordinary. This book attempts to give a feel for the world of Old Shanghai. It is not a history book in the usual sense of the term. There is no need to start at page one and read through to the end. It is a jumble of items which evoke the different eras of Old Shanghai.
"It was one of the most cosmopolitan places that ever existed, full of growth and speculation, of rogues and adventurers, of color and life." - Gareth Powell
